KARL SCHERER

Passed away peacefully on September 16, 2018 at the The Rekai Centre at Wellesley Central Place. He was 87.

Karl was born in Leoben, Austria in 1931. Like many Europeans, he faced tumultuous times which caused him to seek peace and opportunity in Canada, where he emigrated in 1958. In Canada, Karl had no family, few friends and spoke little English when he settled in Toronto. His gregarious nature and involvement in the Austrian Club soon made him friendships which would last a lifetime.

Not long after his arrival he met and fell in love with a beautiful Dutch girl – Hendrika d’Haene, who had just arrived in Canada herself. Henny and Karl married in 1961 and together the two embraced Canada and built a life that exemplified the Canadian dream.

Karl’s career path started at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a sound technician. He joined IATSE Local 873 in 1964, a proud affiliation that provided him with meaningful work and professional relationships that lasted a lifetime.

Often with Henny and his two sons in tow, he traveled the world recording sound on commercials and motion pictures, spending weeks and months at a time in exotic places such as the Bahamas, Alaska and Brazil. His work won him much recognition, including a Genie Award for The Changeling in 1980.

Karl’s pride and joy were his two sons Peter and Robert, who have fond memories of being taught downhill skiing, a sport Karl enjoyed into his 70s. Karl is predeceased by his beloved Henny. He is survived by his sons Peter and Robert, his brother Fritz, daughters-in-law LeeAnne and Kelly, grandchildren Jordan, Cailey, Graham and Gabriel and many far-flung nieces and nephews.
